　^*1837『Zweiter Beitrag Zur Geognosie and Paläontologie Dorpats und Seiner Nächsten Umgebungen：Stepan Semjonovitš Kutorga』。
　カトーガは当初、組織を軟甲カメ類 [Trionychidae, Testudines, Reptilia] として記載。同一文献内で（爬虫類として）別個に記述。まずは本種（Trionyx spinosus Kutorga 1837）とホモスティウス・スルカトゥス（Trionyx sulcatus Kutorga 1837）を記述、その後に亀・イグアナ・鰐・トカゲ・オオトカゲ・魚竜に関する各属解説の後、本属を記述。後年、このまま魚類に移動。
